ONE YEAR DOWN! FOREVER TO GO!
I cannot believe that it has already been one year since I opened up the Pyr + Wit ETSY Shop and Instagram Page!
When the pandemic hit back in March 2020, I knew it was time to make a choice. I had boxes of candles (yes, I was … ok am… a candle hoarder…big time) in the garage, under the bed, in drawers… I quickly realized I was burning through them in record speed. Being home all day everyday, candles were the one thing that brought my husband and I peace and serenity. They filled our home with calming aromas and set the mood for a relaxing atmosphere. With all of the chaos going on outside our doors, candles helped make the space inside our doors safe and comforting.
I also began to get back to the poetry that I loved so deeply. I began to dabble in writing again as well. It was an explorative phase of soul searching, which again, brought me peace. I remember craving poetry and candles to get me through the days.

Before the Pandemic
Back in November 2019, my husband had suggested I try to make my own candles. This was not meant to be a business, just for me since I was spending so much on my candle hoarding tendacies (judgement free zone). We had also began researching safe candles…since I was burning mainly parafin candles. I decided to take his advice and I placed an order on Amazon for Soy Wax and a few holiday scents I knew I would love, along with your basic candle making supplies. Guess what friends got for Christmas that year….Candles!
Admittadly, they were not that great…I was using the wrong oils, the wrong quality soy wax and the wrong process. But I wanted to get better! I began to research and watch hundreds of videos on youtubes on how to make soy wax candles… the right way. I placed another order, this time on Candle Science in December 2019, and when my order finally arrived…the box went into the garage. No time…
MARCH 2020
Fast forward to March 2020 and I found myself with some time. I am a teacher for NYC DOE and one day the hammer dropped and we had a few days off during the transition period where we were going fully remote. I took the box out of the garage, I brushed up on my videos and began testing. WHAT A DIFFERENCE QUALITY MAKES! I loved the candles I was making and I kept practicing and kept testing. I was getting much better! This was still meant to just be for me until a few friends asked if they could buy some. And the lightbulb went off. I began researching names and I made an instagram page. I went through a few names before I settled on PYR + WIT (click to read more about us and our name). I made the logo myself and with the help of a few friends telling me which design they liked the most, this began to get real…real quick!
INSPIRATION
I knew I loved poetry and I knew I obviously loved candles. I knew I wanted to be unique. I always wished my candles had poems on them since that would make the atmosphere even more MOOD for me. And with Mother’s Day around the corner I thought – Why not personalize them with personalized messages too!? I really wanted these candles to be special and make the recipient feel special and loved! The idea was a hit and so many people ordered a candle with me for Mother’s Day! The reaction I got melted my heart and motivated me to keep going and to expand.
WE GOT BETTER!
Now we have updated our labels to include gold foil as well as a new fresh and clean design. We now also can add gold foil to the candle jars and even add flowers. We also now made favors, reed diffusers, car diffusers, room sprays and wax melts and offer a variety of accessories to make your candle burning experience even better! And the scents – OMGoodness do we have a lot of scents to offer and we are always testing and creating new scents to add to our collection!
This has been an extraordinary ride and I cannot wait to see where it will take us! We now have a real WEBSITE!!!! WHAT THE WHAT!!? I never thought this day would come. It brings tears to my eyes knowing just how much all of you have embraced me and my small business! I truly hope these candles bring you as much joy and peace as they have brought me!
